3G - Second Line Failover

What would happen if you have a broadband failure and your internet connections went down?

Nowadays, most companies rely on their broadband connection for many day-to-day business activities. Losing broadband connectivity, even for a short period, can cause real problems. With no email and no Internet access, business may be lost and work can grind to a halt.

It may surprise you to know that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) cannot guarantee that a broadband connection will always work. Instances such as cables being damaged by roadwork’s, line faults and power outages at an Exchange will all cause connections to go down and are outside of an ISP’s control. It may then take considerable time for the connections to be fixed. For example, BT says that their target repair time for ‘faults with an access line is 48 hours’, but then go on to state that ‘more complex broadband network faults may take longer than this to be cleared’.

Could your business afford to be without broadband for 2 days or more?

Implementing a failover solution will minimize downtime should your broadband connection go down. A failover solution switches over to a second broadband connection in the event of the failure of the first. However, if you’re primary connection is an ADSL line (for example), installing a second ADSL line as a back-up may not be the most robust solution.

This is because both connections will share cables in the same road and potentially could share the same Exchange, so both would fail at once should a cabling or Exchange problem occur. A better alternative is to have a second connection that accesses the Internet in a completely different manner.
